Furthur, the newest and most epic reincarnation of the Grateful Dead since Jerry Garcia’s passing, attained the much anticipated headlining slot at All Good Music Festival and Campout 2013.  They played two sets during a four hour set Saturday night from 8:15-12:15.  Led by Grateful Dead alums Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, Furthur also features talent from Joe Russo (Benevento Russo Duo, American Babies), Jeff Chimenti (Ratdog), John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra), as well as Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson on vocals.  Their performance was incredibly on point.  As usual, Furthur just kept cranking out the classic tunes with professional musicianship.  It was almost as if this show featured everyone’s favorite songs.  The first set featured jams such as “Uncle John’s Band” and “The Music Never Stopped.”  The last three songs featured Andy Falco, who is the guitarist from sensational bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters.

Set two featured a whole slew of Dead favorites such as “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen,” and “Scarlet Begonias.”  Grace Potter from Grace Potter and The Nocturnals sat in with them to play an epic rendition of “Turn on Your Love Light” to close out the set.   Afterwards they encored with “Brokedown Palace.”   All in all this was one Furthur show not to miss, and was definitely one of the top highlights of the weekend otherwise packed full of spectacular music.

Furthur has decided to go on a 2014 hiatus, after almost four years of non-stop touring all over the country.  They do, however, have a four-night event at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya in Mexico January 20-24.  After that, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will be focusing on solo projects with less strenuous touring schedules.  They are getting up there in age, so taking a break from the road is completely understandable.
