Review by Craig Havighurst (by permission) of Music City Roots

I was privileged to attend and photograph John McCuen's 70th birthday party show held at Music City Roots. Normally I would write my own review but Craig Havighurst's from his Roots blog was so good that I asked for and received permission to reprint it below. There is a link to the original Music City Roots blog which I encourage all to check out now and for future shows.

During this show at Third and Lindsley Pat Bergeson, one of Nashville's great guitar players, who was sitting in playing harmonica, called Jack Pearson “the greatest”. Jack, in his humble unassuming way, just smiled at the compliment, handed Pat his new white Fender, and asked Pat to play one for the folks.

It's Thanksgiving Day and I am Grateful. It's been 20 years since Jerry died and yet I just saw and photographed a band that had me dancing like I was still a 16 year old kid at the old Filmore. While the Grateful Dead as we knew ceased to exist that sad day in August, 1995, the remaining members have kept the music alive for us. Furthur, The Dead, The Other Ones, Ratdog, Phil and friends, The Rythem Devils, Billy and the Kids, The Mickey Hart Band, and now Dead and Co.

Puscifer at Taft Theater

Puscifer played to a sold out crowd at the Taft Theater on Friday night. Puscifer is the side project band of Maynard James Keenan (Tool, Perfect Circle). The evening started with a full-on wrestling match with lots of professional wrestlers on stage with a full arena set-up. Then Maynard and Carina Round came into the arena to perform a full set of Puscifer's best material. The crowd was in for a great show and lots of loyal fans packed the seats.

Van Halen 2015 Tour with David Lee Roth

Van Halen and Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band played an energetic show with all of their classics last week at Riverbend Music Center. Van Halen consists of David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen. I hadn't seen Van Halen since the early 90's but they sounded very youthful and pulled off all of their hits with grace. It was also a treat to have Stevie Ray Vaughn's ex-drummer playing for KWS Band!

Blues Traveler & Motherfolk at Bogart's

Blues Traveler and Motherfolk played at Bogart's last week. Blues Traveler played old school songs off of the first album and Travelers and Thieves, and several covers that the audience have never heard them perform, as the covers are exclusive to this tour and are on their new album, Blow Up the Moon. It was a nostalgic evening for most of us in the crowd and I forgot how good Blue Traveler is live. The last time I saw Traveler at Bogart's was in 1992 with the Spin Doctors and The Aquarium Rescue Unit...(Lighting was quite dark w lots of red/blue at this show)

Chicago & Earth, Wind and Fire Take the Stage Together for an All-Star Performance

Chicago joined forces with their touring mates Earth, Wind and Fire last night at Riverbend Music Center. Needless to say, there were a lot of people on one stage but they sounded very tight, like they have been doing this together for years. Chicago is only second to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and album chart success in the music industry, which gives the band some serious clout. Riverbend was packed with loyal fans of both bands.

The Smashing Pumpkins & Marilyn Manson End Their Tour at Riverbend

The Smashing Pumpkins & Marilyn Manson ended their summer tour at Riverbend Music Center. The Smashing Pumpkins played just about all of their best tunes off of every album since Gish. Neil Young with The Band of Horses Down By The River

Neil Young played an amazing show at Riverbend Music Center with The Band of Horses. The Band of Horses opened the show with all of their hits, then Neil Young took stage. Young's farmer girls started planting pots and throwing corn all over the stage. While this was going on, Neil came out of the dark over to his piano and immediately went into "After the Gold Rush", "Heart of Gold" into "Old Man." He started out with an acoustic set and then started tearing the place to shreds with The Promise of the Real. They played just about every song the crowd wanted to hear. About mid-set he started into a story about the history of the event at Kent State and the song "Ohio" and then played a 17 minute version of the classic masterpiece. The crowd chanted "forgetting Ohio" at the end. He then looked back at the mighty Ohio River and went into a very rocking version of "Down by the River."

Neal made two things abundantly clear, he still has "it" and he really hates Monsanto/GMO's. Most of his new songs are about his protest to Monsanto and GMO's. I was backstage with a friend from the Band of Horses and he said,  "I haven't had too many conversations with Neil that weren't serious and meaningful about something that matters." I had a few minutes of Neil's time and he was very intense and basically was getting his back into his living with his thoughts and actions. He then directed me to all of his petitions of matters of the heart to him, I of course agreed with his causes and signed away. I have two shots going onto NeilYoung(dot)com this week, check out his site and see if he is coming to a venue near you...

The Music Never Stopped...Thievery Corporation & Beats Antique At Grateful Dead's 50th Anniversary-Fare Thee Well Extravaganza

Thievery Corporation & Beats Antique played for a full house at the Aragon Theater in downtown Chicago for the Grateful Dead's Fare Thee Well weekend. They played several originals and mixed in about 20 Grateful Dead songs including The Other One, China Cat, Eyes of the World, Scarlet, Fire, etc. There were musician and celebrity sightings at this performance and the crowd was in the groove all night. This weekend was the most fun we have had in a long time and will be ingrained into our souls forever. We got the chance to catch all the Soldier Field Dead shows with Trey Anastasio. More photos to come of this spectacular weekend.

My Morning Jacket's Two Night Run at The Palace

Jacket is on tour again promoting their new album, The Waterfall. They played a great set last night at The Palace, which is one of the coolest venues in the country as far as visual aesthetics and great sound. Floating Action opened the show and put on a great performance. They play another show at The Palace tonight which will have several surprises in store, according to Jim James. I got to shoot directly for the band last night, which was exciting as I think they are one of the top touring live bands in the world. Check out Jacket on their US Tour or many festivals. MMJ will headline Forecastle this year, which I will be working. They have also already sold out their Red Rocks Amphitheater show. Multi-Grammy award winning Hozier played with Dawes at The Horseshoe this week. Hozier has been on a non-stop World Tour with their winning album and song "Take Me To Church." The 11th Annual Nelsonville Music Festival

The 11th Annual Nelsonville Music Festival was a great success last weekend. This festival was very intimate compared to some of the larger music festivals I have covered over the years. Located in the scenic Hocking Hills of Southeast Ohio near Athens, the festival had it all; a river running trough it, great camping location, a great recycling program, local vendors, local beer (Jackie O's), a mellow-respectful crowd, kid friendly, great bands, yoga events, daily nature hikes, fun late night dj tent, and an overall great experience. Some of the bands on the lineup included The Flaming Lips, Merle Haggard, St. Vincent, Brandi Carlisle, Trampled by Turtles, Built to Spill, Mavis Staples, The Black Lips, Lucero, Hurray for the Riff Raff, The Budos Band, Natural Child, Bummer, Moon Hooch, Oblivians, San Fermin, Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire), Good English, Ben Sollee, and many more. I didn't get to cover the entire festival due to previous engagements but will make sure to next year. Please check out Nelsonvillefest.org for more information on the festival.
