Hardley Strictly Bluegrass 17

Hellman Hollow, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Ca.
Photos and Review By Joseph F. Carney III, EarthMusic Photography

On a cool fall morning, the city streets are alive with music fans headed from every direction towards Hellman Hollow, Golden Gate Park for the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. As folks move into the beautiful park, it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary festival. The first thing you notice is the diversity in the crowd, Everyone is here. All coming together in this the 50th Anniversary of the Summer Of Love, to witness Warren Hellman's dream of having a free bluegrass festival in San Francisco.
Nestled in the trees and fields, a weekend crowd of around 750,000 music fans moved smoothly, had picnics, sipped wine, played frisbee, and danced amongst the flags, totems and bubbles.

The Magpie Salute Jams In Northern Florida

October 29, 2017

The Florida Theatre
Jacksonville, Florida

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

Jam-band rockers The Magpie Salute cruised into Jacksonville on a cool, crisp Florida day and took over East Forsyth Street with their two mammoth tour buses. Members and road crew were in and out of the buses all afternoon into the evening, which was great fun for fans on the street (this one included). The casual appearance of Rich Robinson chatting outside of his bus in front of the fabulous Florida Theatre was a warm, inviting vision indeed. Following the demise of The Black Crowes in early 2015 after co-founding brothers Rich and Chris Robinson parted ways, Rich moved forward rapidly to assemble a superior lineup of musicians including guitarist Marc Ford, bassist Sven Pipien, keyboardist Eddie Harsch and backup vocalist Charity White, all former Crowes members. (Tragically, Harsch passed away just as The Magpie Salute was starting to take off.) Rounding out the ensemble are guitarist Nico Bereciartua, drummer Joe Magistro, newly added keyboardist Nick Rosen and lead singer John Hogg, who injects his own unique spin into the Chris Robinson sound, as well as backup vocalists Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. With their self-titled debut record dropping earlier this year, the 10-piece collective has been touring steadily and offering a different set list at each show. Digging deep into the BC catalog and also opting for covers as well as material from individual ventures, this group knows how to mix it up and get it done right. What a treat it was to hear Robinson and Ford once again trade tasty licks with their dueling axes.

Sean Chambers Rocks The House in South Florida

June 17, 2017

Terra Fermata
Stuart, Florida

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

Sean Chambers is one of today's most talented bluesmen on the music scene, and he is the real deal. Co-mingling his original compositions with covers from classic blues icons, Chambers' deep, gravelly tones and smooth, tasteful guitar licks offer one hell of a killer live show. The Florida native has been influenced by and compared to everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Gary Moore, and he lives up to those comparisons. Chambers and the band took the stage at 7:10pm on a sweltering night in South Florida, and the only thing hotter than the weather was the music. Backed by an incredibly tight band of seasoned pros including bassist Todd Cook, keys/Hammond B3 player Michael "The Professor" Hensley and former drummer Paul Broderick sitting in for current drummer Kris Schnebelen, the house was indeed a-rockin' at Terra Fermata for two blistering sets of bad-ass blues. See the end of this article for links to the full set of photos from Rock Legends Photographers and live footage from this show, as well as a link to my Ink 19 review of Chambers' latest release, Trouble & Whiskey, which is currently #7 on the Living Blues charts and a must-have for every blues fan.

Jack Pearson's Birthday Bash at 3rd and Lindsley this year was perhaps the best ever. This year's friends included Tommy Emmanuel, Shaun Murphy, Moe Denham, Dave Duncan, Ruth Ann Conley (“Sister Ruth”), Tim Gonzales, Lydia Bain as well as his regulars Charles Treadway on the Hammond and Joshua Hunt on drums.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood West Coast Run

Concert Photos Magazine followed the Chris Robinson Brotherhood's Northern California Tour, Starting in Lake Tahoe, at the Infamous Crystal Bay Casino then Sacramento at the Ace of Spades, and finishing at The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.
This band is getting hotter by the Minute ! Their sound and vibe brings back memories of Chris's roots music and they brought the houses down one at a time and never failed to give the fans every moment to the fullest. His way of mixing all the genres of music from Psychedelically Infused Gospel to ballads to full out Rock and Roll is danceable and smile inducing, every time.     Suggestion, get out to see them while the intimate venues are still a reality.

Tedeschi Trucks Band: A Hometown Inaugural Concert Honoring Gregg Allman

May 27, 2017

EverBank Field
Daily's Place Amphitheater

Jacksonville, Florida

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

“Hello Jacksonville! Are we ready to party?” Jacksonville Jaguars' owner Shad Khan was all smiles introducing hometown darlings, Tedeschi Trucks Band, as they rolled into town on their "Wheels of Soul" 2017 Tour and kicked off the inaugural concert at the new EverBank Field amphitheater, Daily's Place. The beautiful new venue is adjacent to the football stadium and in fact opens right onto it on an upper level. While construction is not quite complete and several finishing touches need to be done, it was certainly ready enough for opening night, and what a night it was. Fronted by husband/wife dynamic duo Derek Trucks (nephew of the late Butch Trucks and 15-year member of The Allman Brothers Band) and Susan Tedeschi, the 12-member ensemble delivered a bittersweet performance as the news of Gregg Allman's passing earlier in the day cast a dark, emotional shadow over the jam band crowd. But hearing TTB open the show with “Ain't Wastin' Time No More,” a song written by Allman and recorded by The Allman Brothers Band shortly after the 1971 passing of his brother, Duane Allman, the fans got their much needed catharsis through the appropriately chosen homage, and a collective weight was somewhat lifted from the atmosphere. The show, as they say, must go on, and indeed it did.

As is befitting to someone who's contribution to the world of music is so great, there will surely be many “tribute Shows” to Gregg Allman in the near future. Jack Pearson turned his regularly scheduled monthly show at 3rd and Lindsley into one when he stepped up to the microphone and dedicated his show to Gregg. The first song, very appropriately, was Jack's “My Old Friend”.

Grand Funk Railroad headlined a picture-perfect Sunday festival at historic Cocoa Village, Florida's Riverfront Park, presented by the Cocoa Rotary Foundation to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. The tunes were cranking, the beer was flowing and the crowd was loving every minute of it. Multiple boats were anchored in the river, taking advantage of the gorgeous weather and the epic music from the iconic band, which still includes founding members Don Brewer (drums/vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass) as well as Max Carl (guitar/harp/vocals, formerly of 38 Special), Bruce Kulick (guitar/vocals, formerly of Kiss) and Tim Cashion (keys/vocals).

Wanee Music Festival 2017 Overview: A Tribute to Butch Trucks

April 21 and 22, 2017

Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park
Live Oak, Florida

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

The pilgrimage to Wanee Music Festival has become a sacred tradition for thousands of people since the inaugural 2005 event at the Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Founded by Gregg Allman and the late Butch Trucks, fans from ALL walks of life converge on the magical, mystical park and enjoy several days of reefer-hazed, alcohol-soaked friendship, fun and of course, MUSIC. Because music is, unequivocally, the universal language, and the jam-based live entertainment at Wanee was the heart and soul of Butch Trucks. So it was only fitting that the event was a tribute to and celebration of the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Claude Hudson “Butch” Trucks.

Jonny Lang at The Plaza Live

April 25, 2017

The Plaza Live
Orlando, Florida

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

Jonny Lang's performance at The Plaza Live in Orlando, Florida turned a humdrum Tuesday night into anything but ordinary, as he rocked the packed house with his unique brand of blues-soaked Christian rock. I have been fortunate to photograph and review many of Lang's productions, but there was something distinctly special about this one. Lang hammed it up for the camera, which was an added bonus indeed. With his gritty vocals and mad guitar skills, Lang has put forth quality presentations over the years, with a faithful fan base flocking to his shows. I felt privileged to be among them. Backed by stellar guitarist Court Clement, drummer Barry Alexander, bassist James Anton and keys player Michael B. Hicks (recently supporting Keb' Mo'), the high-energy, guitar-driven event cranked out for a full two hours.

Explosions In The Sky at Bogart's

Explosions In The Sky play an epic live show. They graced Bogart's on Tuesday night to a crowded house. This was EITS's first trip to Cincinnati and it is evident that they have a loyal fan base. I had only seen EITS once at a large festival in California, but they sounded amazing in a 1500 capacity size venue. Check these guys from Austin, Texas out if you get the chance. EITS are a live act not to be missed.

St. Augustine Amphitheatre

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

Iconic Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy thrilled fans in St. Augustine, Florida at the sensational St. Augustine Amphitheatre, performing with his usual showmanship. Looking and sounding stronger than ever, Guy played an 80-minute set of killer blues that rocked the socks off the crowd. Amid the polka dots and f-bombs, witty banter and guitar tricks, Guy made it look effortless and thoroughly enjoyable, even after all these years of shows. If you have the opportunity to attend a Buddy Guy show in your area, make it a priority. They broke the mold with him, and it just doesn't get any better.

Tinsley Ellis at Terra Fermata

April 15, 2017

Terra Fermata
Stuart, Florida

by Michelle Wilson of Rock Legends Photographers

It's indeed a thrill when Tinsley Ellis embarks on a short tour of his native Florida, and when one of his stops is at Terra Fermata, it's even better. Backed by bassist Jonathan Holland and drummer Erik Kaszynski, the bluesman wowed the packed house with his ultra-smooth guitar licks and seasoned songwriting skills. He has an uncanny way of making eye contact with the audience that is rare in most musicians but quite appealing. The 100-minute set was over in the blink of an eye and was chock full of Ellis originals and a few covers. Fans were treated to three guitar appearances in the evening rotation: a 1967 Gibson ES-345 (affectionately named "Big Dog"), a 1959 Rosewood Fender Stratocaster and a 1982 Gibson Moderne reissue used for slide, and oh, how he made them sing!

Tauk with Peridoni at The Madison Theater

Robert Randolph & The Family Band played a great show last night to a sold out Taft Ballroom. They played several originals and dazzled a few covers, including Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. They are on a national tour and seem to be enjoying life immensely. Robert Randolph has a new album out entitled "Got Soul." He was signing the album for at least half an hour after the show. In a city full of exceptional musicians you would expect nothing less than a tribute/cover band to be the best. With Nashville's own “Midnight Rider's” that proves to be the case. A Weekend with the Bruce Katz Band

February 25th and 26th
By Michael Yanko and Michelle Wilson

Some bands are so good that you just cannot get enough of them, and for us, the Bruce Katz Band is definitely one of them! With keys master Bruce Katz tickling the ivories, Chris Vitarello playing ultra clean guitar licks and belting out strong, smooth vocals, and Ray Hangen banging out precise drum beats, this power blues/rock/jazz trio thrilled the crowds everywhere we went. Katz (Blues Hall of Fame Inductee 2013) has performed with the likes of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman, John Hammond, Ronnie Earl and The Broadcasters and Delbert McClinton, to name a few. In addition to playing with Katz, Vitarello (Blues Hall of Fame Inductee 2013) also has collaborated with the late Jimmy McGriff, Tad Robinson and Floyd Miles, in addition to many others, and is a member of the Chris O’Leary Band. Hangen (2010 Buffalo Music Award for Best Blues Drummer) has played with The Blues Hounds and Brandon Santini.

JD & The Straight Shot

By Michael Yanko
for Concert Photos Magazine

Live at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL 1-24-17

When you are selected to be the opening act for a sold out Don Henley concert you have to be doing something right!

The band represents a combination of blues, rock, Americana, country, and bluegrass.

The acoustic set by JD & The Straight Shot was very entertaining and they did a great job warming up the crowd.  JD (James Dolan, yes, THAT James Dolan) was very personable, and what little he may have lacked in vocal skills he more than made up for through rapport with the crowd and an excellent supporting band.  JD wonderfully explained the history and/or meaning of each song and the crowd really seemed to be very responsive to his banter. The band has recorded 6 albums and performed a nice mix of a few older originals and songs off their new album “Ballyhoo.”

The Lumineers World Tour at US Bank Arena with Andrew Bird and Margaret Glaspy

The Lumineers are on their "Cleopatra World Tour" that made a stop at US Bank Arena last night. The openers were Margaret Glaspy followed by Andrew Bird. Last night was sold out. All three bands put on quite a performance. I haven't seen Andrew Bird or The Lumineers in several years and I was completely blown away. The band had great energy from start to encore. The Lumineers went into the middle of the arena and played on a riser above the crowd which seemed more intimate than just playing on the front stage. I didn't know the Lumineers had such a following, until last evening as the crowd was into every song that was performed. The band leaves here to play a few shows at Madison Square Gardens.
