Snoop Dogg Performs at Belly Up in San Diego

Snoop with DJ Artistic performed for a small crowd (600 capacity) at The Belly Up in Solana Beach, California. Both nights sold out in under 5 minutes and everyone in San Diego was scrambling to see the show. Snoop dropped all the classics and also played some Snoop Lion tracks off the new album Reincarnated. The green room was fittingly named on this particular occasion. The lighting wasn't great at the show due to Snoops request to "dim it izup." Check Snoop out at selected small venue locations throughout the U.S before he goes back to the arena/festival tour.

Lamb Of God, In Flames, Hellyeah and Sylosis report

Lamb Of God
In Flames
Hellyeah
Sylosis Concert
At The Orbit Room, Grand Rapids, MI.
12-03-12

We were looking forward to seeing the show because of the great line-up.  Lamb Of God we’ve seen twice before and knew that they put on a great show.  Sylosis and Inflames we haven’t heard that much their music but looked forward to hearing them live.

Hellyeah we’ve been waiting to see for a long time.  We are both big time Pantera fans and Hellyeah fans as well.  While we were driving to the concert we listened to some Pantera music.

We couldn’t wait to get to The Orbit Room.  As we were pulling in to park we noticed the very long line waiting to get in.  We found out this was a sold out show.

Brantley Gilbert: Hell On Wheels Tour

Hell on Wheels is Brantley Gilbert's first tour as a headliner.   After writing songs that have vaulted other artists to fame before him and touring relentlessly for the last 5 years, it was Brantley's turn to be in the limelight. He came out to "My Kinda Party", a song he wrote for Jason Aldean, and never let up for the remainder of the show.  Brantley demonstrated to the packed house at Freedom Hall that he was more than capable of being the main attraction.

Metalocalypse: Dethklok, Machine Head, All That Remains and The Black Dahlia Murder

Metalocalypse:
Dethklok
Machine Head
All That Remains
The Black Dahlia Murder

This show took place 11-11-12 at The Orbit Room, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The 11th was Veterans Day and also National Metal Day.  “What a way to celebrate National Metal Day,” I figured.

Remembering the people who served our country was important to remember also.  Thanking veterans and remembering the ones who gave their life defending our country was also on my mind.

Now And Forever by Sister Sin

Now And Forever
By Sister Sin
Album Review

Sister Sin has a quality of the 80’s metal bands and modern metal also.  The lead singer’s vocals has the power of Joan Jett.  But also has the vocal metal smoothness of a female Dio.

The vocals blend so smooth with any metal riff and drums.  Holding the notes on vocals as long as she wants.  The guitar playing no matter what song on this album I really like.

The guitar playing is unique on each song so it doesn’t sound the same.  That’s perfect for this album so people don’t get bored with the same sound on each song.  Bass and drums blend in smoothly to make this band great.

Seether, Kyng and Eye Empire,The Triple Threat Tour

Seether
Kyng, Eye Empire
At The Orbit Room,
Grand Rapids, Michigan

My son and I working as a team made it to The Orbit Room in Grand Rapids, Michigan early.  While we were waiting in line for an hour we ran into friend we met at Five Finger Death Punch.  As we report more and more shows we make friends along the way.

All of them have great taste in music. That’s why we keep running into them at shows.  Before the show we talked a while about up coming shows at The Orbit Room.  Lately The Orbit Room has been lining up some great rock and metal shows.

So far this year we’ve been to The Orbit Room three times and plan to be back two more times at least.  The Orbit Room is a great place to go for a concert.  Usually before or after bands sets are done they’ll hang out at the band’s merchandise booth.

Smashing Pumpkins at Viejas Arena

The Smashing Pumpkins returned to San Diego on October 13th to play for an enthusiastic crowd at SDSU's Viejas Arena. The first set was their new album, Oceana, in its entirety. The new album shows Corgan's maturity in the music business, and features the depth of the Pumpkins' musical talents.  Billy has always said he gets bored playing Gish and Siamese Dream tracks and is moving in new directions. The Oceana set sounded less melancholy than previous works, with complex rifts and melodies that old school Pumpkins fans seemed to enjoy. The second set was all of the classics. Billy seemed to be in a great mood on this fall night towards the end of The Smashing Pumpkins Oceana tour. We were not allowed to shoot from the pit at this show. The floor was packed and I forgot my zoom, but still got a few photos to exhibit.

Shockpocalypse
At The Orbit Room
Grand Rapids, Michigan

When I heard that Pop Evil was putting on a show at The Orbit Room in Grand Rapids, Michigan it sounded like a concert to go to.   When I told my friends at work they thought I was crazy to go but probably would do the same thing.  After working 12 hours I hurried out of work and picked up my son to assist me in covering the concert.

Happy 87th Birthday to the Grand Ole Opry

By Butch Worrell Nashville, TN 87 years ago the Grand Ole Opry began it’s Saturday night radio broadcast, bringing the sound of country music to millions of fans.
A tradition that continues today in the same format with 30 minute segments hosted by Opry stars. A sense of family prevails among the stars and workers which makes this show unique. Tonight’s show featured Ricky Scaggs, Little Jimmy Dickens (still trucking on at 91 years young), the Whites, Ray Stevens, Riders in the Sky, Jason Aldean, Casey James, Mallery Hope, and Steve Warnier. The cake was rolled out by long time stagehand Gary leverett, son of the famous Opry photographer Les Leverett. Family counts backstage at the Opry.

BRUCE - MetLife Stadium 9/22-23 Happy Birthday Boss

Images and article by Bill Kelly

 63 years old.
When most of us think of this milestone, images of quiet family dinners,  maybe a round of golf and, if lucky enough, pop a little blue pill and try your luck with the Mrs.  But not Bruce Springsteen - Playing before a sold out crowd that had waited through a 2+ hour rain delay, Bruce took the stage at home state New Jersey’s MetLife stadium and powered through a 33 song set, hitting the last note at 2:00am.

Matisyahu at Humphrey's By The Bay in San Diego

Matisyahu played at Humphrey's By the Bay in San Diego on September 19, 2012. I have not seen Matisyahu since he changed his look and I didn't recognize him until I heard the same Matisyahu voice and realized he has chopped his hair and his beard. Matis played for a large crowd by the bay and played all the classics and several songs off his newest album Spark Seeker.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers Return to San Diego

The Red Hot Chili Peppers perform in San Diego for another sold out performance at The Valley View Casino Center. The band was up to their usual antics of jumping around the stage and getting great crowd interaction. I got to interview Flea pre-show and I must say his brand of sarcasm is right up my alley. It turns out we were both surfing the same beach before the show. This show was re-scheduled from several months ago as Anthony Kiedis broke his leg. The setlist was great as they played a little bit off every one of their albums including the songs "Otherside, Under the Bridge, Around the World, Sir Psycho Sexy, By the Way." The sound quality was very good for an arena show and their stage setup was impeccable with several large monitors playing real time band videos.

My Morning Jacket Three Night Run in Los Angeles

My Morning Jacket played three nights in a row in Los Angeles, CA at The Wiltern Theater. They played no repeats and rocked almost every song in their catalog plus covers such as "Rocket Man" and "Rock the Casbah." After photographing over 300 bands this year (mostly at Festivals), MMJ is one of my top 5 live bands. They only seem to be getting better and more dynamic with their live performances. I met people from all over the country who came to this three night run for some live MMJ. Good times were had by all.

Farm Aid 2012

The 27th annual Farm Aid took place in Hershey Pa. this year. A full day of music that started around 2:30 pm and went till close to midnight. Scaled back some from the first Farm Aid that had 54 bands and 78,000 fans. The Hershey show had 12 bands, 30,000 fans (sold out). Still they have brought in just  over 40 million dollars over the years to help the small farmer.

Elton John: Greatest Hits Tour

Elton John returned to perform at Johnson City's Freedom Hall on September 16th after a 12 year hiatus. Freedom Hall has had its share of big acts (Aerosmith, The Eagles, Elvis Presley) but Elton John was the biggest act to perform there in quite some time. Needless to say the show sold out in a matter of hours.  The crowd was certainly appreciative of having a performer of that magnitude come to their small town and they showed it!

My Darkest Days with Otherwise, Surrender The Fall and Deadwood Stone

My Darkest Days
Otherwise
Surrender The Fall
Deadwood Stone
At
The Intersection, Grand Rapids, Michigan
09-17-2012

On Monday we decided to go to the Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  If you have never been to the Intersection you’re missing out on seeing your favourite bands perform up close.  This was the third time we covered shows at the Intersection for that reason.

Before seeing the show we viewed all of the bands on youtube to listen to their music.  Videos and sound tracks don’t do any of the bands justice after hearing them live.  All four bands sounded great live.

RockStar Energy Upraor Festival Noblesville, Indiana Sept 8th 2012 at Klipsch Music Center

Despite being over and hour late to the venue thanks to construction traffic, we managed to see most of the bands and get all of our interviews done. Walking in, Klipsch is packed like I’ve never seen. People milling around between the vendors and stages all seem to be in good spirits as everyone shares the same motive for the day: enjoy some bad ass music. Squeezing all those people into that small of a space may seem like it would be a problem but the combined excitement and anticipation of everyone there kinda makes you overlook the drunken douchebags walking around spilling beer on everything and slurring all their words. All in all it’s a great atmosphere to be a part of.

This year headlining at the Illinois State Fair was Brantley Gilbert an up and coming, rising Country music superstar. He put on an excellent show and really knew how to work the crowd!

Charlie Daniels Band

At this year's Illinois State Fair a country legend was there - The Charlie Daniels Band! At 75 years old, he came out in a firestorm and took the crowd over and gave them a great show! He owned that fiddle like crazy, strapped on a guitar and tore that up also, just incredible.

Carnival Of Madness

Carnival Of Madness
Rock The Rapids,
Grand Rapids, Michigan
08-23-2012

I decided to surprise my family with vip passes to the Carnival Of Madness tour.  The closest show was at Rock The Rapids, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Which we covered Uproar Festival 08-21-2012 and knew how good it was and where everything was located.

I mainly bought the vip passes as part of my daughter’s birthday present for her 17th birthday.  Her favorite groups Cavo, Halestorm, Chevelle, and Evanescence were all going to be there.  They all inspire her to play guitar and violin, but most of all Amy Lee of Evanescence and Lizzie Hale of Halestorm.

Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival

Rockstar Energy Drink
Uproar Festival
Rock The Rapids, Grand Rapids Michigan.
08/21/2012

My Son and I never went to the outdoor festival called Rock The Rapids.  Rock The Rapids is located behind the VanAndel Arena, in the large open parking lot.  This location makes for a great outdoor event.

We both wanted to see the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival.  Because of the great line-up of five great sounding bands it made the show complete and amazing.  The first thing I have to say is that all the bands could have headlined each other.

Hank III Performs at The House of Blues in San Diego

Hank III, also know as Shelton Hank Williams, is the son of Hank Williams Jr. and grandson of Hank Williams. While Hank III has country in his blood, he also has a healthy dose of Punk, Rock-a-Billy, Honky Tonk and Metal up his sleeves. This week has been quite long after working Phish and Outside Lands in San Francisco. My intention on covering Hank III was to get my photos done and leave to go get some well deserved rest. I found myself watching the entire show as the crowd and the band leaves you yearning for more. Hank III delivered catchy riffs, a diverse and talented set with the antics of a full on rock star. If you enjoy any of the genres previously mentioned, Hank III is a must see show.

Black Stone Cherry concert report

Black Stone Cherry
With Stellar Revival, R’eaul,
Pass Of Aggression at
The Intersection, Grand Rapids, Michigan
08-14-12

The concert blindsided me it was a last minute show to go see.  I entered another contest put on by local radio station WGRD 97.9.  I won two tickets to the show along with meet and greets.

We were brought in for sound check with Black Stone Cherry.   A crowd of people all went with us that won tickets also.  The band offered to play three songs just for us which sounded great.

The band hung out with the crowd afterwards letting people talk and get autographs with the band.   I really enjoyed a casual style of meet and greet it was more down to earth that way.

Five Finger Death Punch Trespass America Tour

Five Finger Death Punch
Trespass America Festival
Kellogg Arena, Battlecreek,
Michigan
08/03/2012

The good thing about arriving at the Kellogg Arena I parked right next to the arena.  They offer a parking garage attached to the Arena along with an indoor lobby area.  It was in the low 90’s that day so it was nice for the first time to wait inside where it was air conditioned.

I found out early that my cell phone only worked outside the lobby once inside I had no reception, which ruined our hopes for most interviews.  We did anchor one interview with John Outcalt the bass player for God Forbid.
The interview went great and we made John laugh at some of the questions we asked.

After the interview we made our way back to will call to get our VIP, photo passes and tickets.  Again it was air conditioned and in the winter it’s heated which is a plus for going to see a show.  You also have a Starbuck’s shop inside for eats and drinks which we stopped at.

Lindsey Buckingham at the Franklin Theatre

By Butch Worrell
      Nashville, TN

It is a rare occasion to see such a rock icon in such a small venue.

The show sold out quickly despite the high ticket prices. But he did not let the audience down.  It was a great show by a great artist at a great venue.

Steve Kimock with Bernie Worrell, Wally Ingram, and Andy Hess

Bernie Worrell and Steve Kimock
Steve Kimock with Bernie Worrell, Wally Ingram, and Andy Hess performed together this summer including
a stop at The Grey Eagle in Asheville, North Carolina.  The small club was packed to see the
four musicians with diverse musical backgrounds.  Steve Kimock brought a large array of
guitars including one pedal steel and switched offed frequently.  The quartet melded well with
Kimock singing melodies with his fingers.  Wally Ingram stayed sharp on drums despite the
thick hot air in the back of the club by the stage.  Andy Hess put down a subtle yet heavy-toned
bass.  Bernie Worrell, a true living legend, burned a funky twist into the jams that kept the feet
moving.  Seeing such a barrage of talent combine for summer night of entertainment was a
great treat for those who came.

Sublime with Rome, Cypress Hill & Pepper-- Smoke the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in San Diego

Sublime w Rome, Cypress Hill and Pepper brought their "A" game to Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in San Diego, California on July 27th, 2012. After not getting to bear witness to these acts in quite a while, the bands dazzled the crowd and played all of the classics from "Rock Superstar" to "What I Got." The bands talked about all of the good times spent in the San Diego area. It was also clear that the San Diego crowd has spent a lot of time listening to them over the years as the entire crowd sings "Summertime."

I was able to see these bands more than a decade ago and honestly thought they sound better now. It was definitely overheard that most people thought Rome has a very amazing and intense voice that sounds very close to the late Bradley of Sublime. This show was a blast from the past in a very good and uplifting way. Check them out at an amphitheater near you!

This is the third year my family and I invested in the Mayhem Festival.  Setting aside money and planning vacation time if needed to be ready for the Festival.  My son and I work as a team reporting the show.

Granny Whites at the Lipstick Lounge

By Butch Worrell Nashville, TN

The Granny Whites recently  played one of Nashville’s coolest nightclubs, The Lipstick Lounge.
The Granny Whites are a five member, all female band that if you give them a chance, will definitely steal your face. A little bit rock, a little bit folk with a whole lot of soul, they rocked out the Lipstick lounge that night. In their own words they are….. JK Camardella (uke, guitar, banjo, vocals) , Daphne Culver (guitar, piano, accordion, vocals) Jacki Macri (mindblowing drums, washboard other percussion instruments) Rometrius North (bass guitar, guitar, sax, clarinet) Anna Bethany Hogue (vocals, tambourine, spoons, did we mention vocals?!)
