The Black Crowes performed last night, September 19, 2010 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC on their Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys tour. The band got its start in 1984 prior to adopting their current name. The Black Crowes have announced that this is their last tour after two decades on the road. (Click on photos to view full size)
The tour, accompanying the 2010 release of an acoustic based release Crowology with recordings of rearrangements of many of the band's popular original songs, is composed of a full acoustic set and a electric set at each venue. The acoustic set not one of those stay in your seat performances. Instead, Luther Dickenson blazed on the slide with his plugged in acoustic guitars making some forget they were listening to an acoustic set.

The Black Crowes current band members on tour are Chris Robinson, Rich Robinson, Luther Dickinson, Adam MacDougal, Steve Gorman, Joe Magistro, Sven Pipien, Charity White and Mona Lisa Young.

Steve Gorman put on a notable extended drum jam with percussionist Joe Magistro during the second set.

Pixies at The Tower 2010
The Pixies at The Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. September 7, 2010.
Taking the stage at the historic Tower Theater in Philadelphia Tuesday night, the Pixies opened the final leg of their Doolittle redux tour with a blast of nostalgia, melting faces both young and old in the process. Over the last year, the band has jumped on the "front to back" touring bandwagon, focusing on one album from their oeuvre and playing all tracks from said feature, sprinkling the set list with b-sides and other rarities from that period in their career. As "Doolittle", their seminal art-punk-rock-pop album released in 1989, is considered by many to be a touchstone in the alterna-rock category, it was cause for celebration for hipsters everywhere as the band strolled on-stage, opening the set with the obscure b-side "Dancing The Manta Ray". Backed by a rather elaborate lighting / video system synced with the bands efforts, the group plowed through such hits as "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Hey", and "Gouge Away", delivering meaty riffs and classic lyrics from what many still consider the halcyon glory days of indie music.
Francis Black, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have had one of the more well-publicized, tempestuous relationships in the annals of broken rock-and-roll bands. Moving on to varied solo careers and session work, the band reconvened 4 + years ago to milk the alterna-nostalgia market. Unlike the majority of like-minded ventures by other bands of their ilk, this reunion was rapturously well-received from the outset, introducing a new generation of skinny jeaned, floppy-haired youths to the harsh yet soothing soundscapes the band so elegantly captured back in the late 80's. Their talent and virtuosity was on full display Tuesday night as they plowed through the album in its entirety, making minimal small talk yet producing maximum volume as hands were waved and lyrics were mangled / shouted. Two encores later, the crowd was sated as the band took their final bows together as a group. I'm not sure we'll ever have the pleasure of hearing new music from this band again. However, I am sure the pleasure recognized from seeing them live more than compensates for this in so many ways.

MoogFest 2010 - Halloween Weekend in Asheville!

Update - September 22, 2010 - MoogFest has released more weekend passes which are still on sale. Initial release sold out. Don't miss out on this opportunity to still get weekend passes for this Halloween spectacular. Also, the line-up has been expanded to include many more performers and an awards ceremony and workshops have been added to the weekend festival.
Opening up new avenues for creativity on a quantum scale, Bob Moog was a musical and electronic genius. His understanding of the fundamental physiology of sound and electricity enabled him to time and time again, push back the boundaries of what was previously science fiction to become reality in the form of his circuits of vacuum tubes and later on with semiconductor transistors embedded in the many pioneering devices his company developed over the course of over half a century.
MoogFest, an electronic music festival dedicated to the life achievements and contributions of Bob Moog has moved from NYC and is taking place this year in Asheville, North Carolina over Halloween weekend - October 29-31, 2010. The indoor festival is going to be held at several locations throughout downtown Asheville. MoogFest be held primarily at the Asheville Civic Center and the adjoining Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. Other shows are scheduled for music venue The Orange Peel.

MoogFest is going to be featuring a wide selection of artists within the electronic music genres. DEVO, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Big Boi, Girl Talk, Hot Chip, Panda Bear, Pretty Lights, Disco Biscuits, Van Dyke Parks, Dan Deacon, Jonsi, Caribou, Fourt Tet, RJD2, Dâm-Funk, School of Seven Bells, and MGMT are all scheduled to perform. The full lineup is at MoogFest's website.
MoogFest is also going to be hosting discussions with some of the performing artists, workshops and other interactive experiences. Film screenings and visual art exhibits will also be a part of MoogFest 2010.
Update: MoogFest is still announcing new performances to the lineup. Just added: Cee-Lo, Sleigh Bells, Neon Indian, and Omar Souleyman to Sunday night, All Hallows’ Eve, plus Mutemath playing Friday!

Like Bob Moog, DEVO enthusiastically charted their own course and thus dramatically affected pop culture because of it. Not to mention the fact that they used Moog instruments to create their inimitable sound. MoogFest and the Moog Innovation Award is the perfect way to pay homage to Bob Moog and his adopted hometown of Asheville, NC where he raised his kids, gave birth to some of his greatest inventions and where he re-established the company that bears his name and carries on his legacy, Moog Music.
