Jesse McReynolds CD Release Party in Nasheville

By Butch Worrell
Nashville, TN

It was Jesse McReynolds CD release party at the Station Inn, Nashville’s cool Bluegrass music venue. He has followed up Jim and Jessie’s earlier success at adapting Rock N Roll to his unique style ( “Berry Picking” covering the music of Chuck Berry) with “The Songs of the Grateful Dead”, A tribute to Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. The crowd was a mixture of old Jim and Jessie fans from the Grand Ole Opry years mixed with deadheads there to hear him cover their favorite Dead tunes. He didn’t disappoint either crowd, playing 2 full sets of his original songs, his Chuck Berry covers, and of course his Dead covers. Backed up with a talented band including 3 of his Grandchildren, he showed the crowd that he still has the master’s touch with the Mandolin. Excited about his upcoming appearance at the Rex benefit in San Francisco he explained that he was married to a Deadhead and the CD was also a gift to her. He also talked about the old days in the Virginia mountains, including the story about the corn crop that made 45 gallons an acre. But mainly he and the Virginia boys band showed just how hot Bluegrass could be. What an incredible night of music.

The Music never Stopped

After seeing Furthur for two night in a row (Sovereign Center Reading Pa & 1st Mariner Arena Baltimore Md) it was easy to see that the music never stopped. Deadheads ranging from their teens to their 60's were at both shows. Furthur has two founding members, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir leading the way. Along with Jay Chimenti, Joe Russo, John Kadlecik and back-up singers Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson. Some of the songs played over the last couple of days included China Cat>Come Together, Wharf Rat, Franklins Tower, Revolution, Black Throated Wind, Money for Gasoline, Foolish Heart, Cosmic Charlie, Hard to Handle and Touch of Gray. I find this to be one of the better line-ups in recent years.

Roger Waters St. Louis MO 10/29/10

To say this was another rock concert would be like saying the Titanic was just a boat.  Roger Waters pulled no punches and spared no expense when he launched this 96 stop tour that spans the globe.  It was a real treat to find out that not only were they allowing the press in this show, since we have been told the last few months that we wouldn't, but we were given 5 songs from the pit.    As with the rest of the shows, the management has teamed with a local groups of kids to perform on stage for Another Brick in the Wall 2. The kids from the Matthew Dickey boys & girls club performed their hearts out as Roger fell in line to dance with them, all the while playing that famous bass riff.  It was defiantly a sight to see.  I was only 2 years old when The Wall originally hit the airwaves but I can only imaging that the technology advancements in the last 30 years has made this one of the best shows on earth.  Enjoy the images.

Muse - Raleigh, NC - 10/26/10

Photos and words by Zach Stamey

After headlining Coachella, the British rock band Muse made a stop in Raleigh, NC at the RBC Center while they continue their tour for their latest album "The Resistance".

The night kicked off with their special guest Metric, whose music was used in the soundtrack for the 2010 film "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World".

As good as Metric's performance was, there was absolutely no way to prepare for the face melting mayhem of music that Muse unleashed upon the massive coliseum of screaming fans.

The clock strikes 10 and the lights go out. The crowd erupts with ear-piercing screams as three massive towers illuminate from the darkness. The curtains over the towers drop and the insane mind numbing performance ensues as Muse rocks out at near 30 feet in the air, high atop the mid-level part of the towers.

At first glance you wouldn't think that this rock trio could fill this enormous stage but you would be dead wrong. Half way through their second song the towers began to slowly lower to the stage level below where both guitarists took off in either direction, running to both stage left and stage right where microphones awaited them both.

They had everything from lasers to fog, to live video being projected onto the towers, you name it!

At one point in the night a bright light was shone onto lead vocalist/guitarist Matthew Bellamy's ultra reflective guitar as he beamed the light out onto the crowd like a search light.

Muse is a band that is not to be missed. If you see that they are performing near you, drop what you are doing and go see them. You will not be disappointed.
