The 11th Annual Nelsonville Music Festival

The 11th Annual Nelsonville Music Festival was a great success last weekend. This festival was very intimate compared to some of the larger music festivals I have covered over the years. Located in the scenic Hocking Hills of Southeast Ohio near Athens, the festival had it all; a river running trough it, great camping location, a great recycling program, local vendors, local beer (Jackie O's), a mellow-respectful crowd, kid friendly, great bands, yoga events, daily nature hikes, fun late night dj tent, and an overall great experience. Some of the bands on the lineup included The Flaming Lips, Merle Haggard, St. Vincent, Brandi Carlisle, Trampled by Turtles, Built to Spill, Mavis Staples, The Black Lips, Lucero, Hurray for the Riff Raff, The Budos Band, Natural Child, Bummer, Moon Hooch, Oblivians, San Fermin, Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire), Good English, Ben Sollee, and many more. I didn't get to cover the entire festival due to previous engagements but will make sure to next year. Please check out Nelsonvillefest.org for more information on the festival.

Bunbury Music Festival 2014

Bunbury Music Festival had another successful year on the banks of the Ohio River. The festival featured five different stages, over 100 bands, a craft beer area with hundreds of great beers, fireworks, and great weather to round out a perfect weekend. Some of the performers included The Flaming Lips, Paramore, Fallout Boy, Heartless Bastards, The Orwells, Dead Sara, J Roddy Walston, Empire of the Sun, Fitz and the Tantrums, Young the Giant, Foxy Shazam, ZZ Ward, Andrew WK, Cage the Elephant and several others.  Several hundred more Bunbury moments including crowd shots at my flickr site under the Bunbury Album.

Live From the Beach--Hangout Music Festival 2014

Hangout Festival 2014 included the likes of Outkast, The Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr., Wolfmother, Avett Brothers, Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Queens of the Stone Age, Wiz Khalifa, Capital Cities, Fitz and the Tantrums, Iron & Wine, Dawes, Amos Lee, Ozomatli, Bastille, Pretty Lights, Tegan & Sara, STS9, Jack Johnson, Trombone Shorty and about 100 more bands. This year had perfect weather and a great crowd. Hangout 2014 sold out about a month before the festival began making it one of the largest festivals in the country. Did some quick edits here (60 images of about 6,000 taken) with more to come including a crowd gallery. Check Jambase and Palladia for more coverage from myself and several others I had the pleasure working with all weekend.

The Flaming Lips Magic at All Good Festival

Wayne Coyne with The Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips are known for their delightful on-stage theatrics and crowd engagement.  This was especially the case when they performed for a jam packed audience at the 2012 All Good Music Festival and Campout in Thornville, Ohio.  The Lips started out the show by playing arguably one of their best songs, “Race for the Prize.”  The next two hours would hold numerous other philosophical yet entertaining songs including a cover of Pink Floyd’s “On the Run”.
