Pixies at The Tower 2010

The Pixies at The Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. September 7, 2010.

Taking the stage at the historic Tower Theater in Philadelphia Tuesday night, the Pixies opened the final leg of their Doolittle redux tour with a blast of nostalgia, melting faces both young and old in the process. Over the last year, the band has jumped on the "front to back" touring bandwagon, focusing on one album from their oeuvre and playing all tracks from said feature, sprinkling the set list with b-sides and other rarities from that period in their career. As "Doolittle", their seminal art-punk-rock-pop album released in 1989, is considered by many to be a touchstone in the alterna-rock category, it was cause for celebration for hipsters everywhere as the band strolled on-stage, opening the set with the obscure b-side "Dancing The Manta Ray". Backed by a rather elaborate lighting / video system synced with the bands efforts, the group plowed through such hits as "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Hey", and "Gouge Away", delivering meaty riffs and classic lyrics from what many still consider the halcyon glory days of indie music.

Francis Black, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have had one of the more well-publicized, tempestuous relationships in the annals of broken rock-and-roll bands. Moving on to varied solo careers and session work, the band reconvened 4 + years ago to milk the alterna-nostalgia market. Unlike the majority of like-minded ventures by other bands of their ilk, this reunion was rapturously well-received from the outset, introducing a new generation of skinny jeaned, floppy-haired youths to the harsh yet soothing soundscapes the band so elegantly captured back in the late 80's. Their talent and virtuosity was on full display Tuesday night as they plowed through the album in its entirety, making minimal small talk yet producing maximum volume as hands were waved and lyrics were mangled / shouted. Two encores later, the crowd was sated as the band took their final bows together as a group. I'm not sure we'll ever have the pleasure of hearing new music from this band again. However, I am sure the pleasure recognized from seeing them live more than compensates for this in so many ways.

String Cheese Incident Tickets

Photos by David Oppenheimer

Well, it looks like once again the recently reunited String Cheese Incident will 'String ' their way across the country this year for a few select ' Incidents.'  The SCI will kick off their array of ' Incidents' July 4, 2010 at Rothbury, Michigan.  Then they will continue their trail of cheese to the beautiful, fabulous and always sold out Red Rocks Amphitheater in the breathtaking town of Morrison, Colorado for four nights in July, which are the 23-25 with a four day break until July 29.  The trail will then continue to yet another amphitheater tantamount to that of Red Rocks in the Great Northwest at Horning's Hideout in North Plains, Oregon. Unfortunately, this show is sold out as well, but here are the dates anyway: July 29 - August 1. Guest musicians have not been announced yet, but should be forthcoming on their website soon.

Finally their trail of cheese will lead them to the legendary Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia on Halloween weekend, which the SCI has described as a ' Hulaween Incident ' with a three set night with The Disco Biscuits on October 30.  From my own personal experiences at Hampton, expect nothing but the best when it comes to a live show, no matter who is playing there. The Hampton tickets went on sale April 20, 2010 and are still on sale, but they won't be for long.

Widespread Panic - All Good Festival Return

Story by Todd "Fox" Johnson
Photos by David Oppenheimer

Once Again, Widespread Panic helps escalate this shindig in the woods, and It's All Good.

All Spreadheads and blues soaked jam rock fans rejoice, as Widespread Panic descends on the 14th annual All Good Festival in Masontown WV; July 8-11 2010. They are far from alone leading the way with Further (feat. Phil Lesh and Bob Weir). In addition there are a superb array of artists such as: Keller Williams, Femi Kuti, Bassnectar, YMSB, George Clinton and The P-Funk All Stars and Dark Star Orchestra to illuminate your summer festival highlight reel with.

Widespread Panic Tickets Now On Sale! (see link at bottom of article).

For Widepsread Panic, this will be a brilliant boogie spectacle near the end of a string of wonderful summer tour shows. All of this begins on June 5th at Wakarusa Music Festival in Arkansas, then several nights at the always sold out Red Rocks in Colorado, onto the luscious High Sierra Music Festival in California, next full-tilt boogie time in West Virginia at All Good Festival, finally closing summer at Forecastle Festival in Kentucky. They will be freewheelin' through another immensely successful summer festival season; as they release an 11th studio album "Dirty Side Down", on May 25th.
Now, for anyone not familiar with the venue Marvin's Mountaintop; it is a unique 655 acre slice of gorgeous Appalachian foothills. It offers the chance to blend lush musical landscapes of the highest standards with panoramic outdoor enjoyment. Which if like me, you prefer the medium sized festival scene to the overly inflated others; this is the 'Phamily' kind of gathering we all seek. All Good Festival will continue its tradition of intimate but musically expansive festivals. This year will be offered with over 40 hours of music, with "No Overlapping Sets". If your synaptic processes are connecting then you probably just realized the potential for days of musical bliss; without having to forgo the start of one act for the end of another.

Widespread Panic as in years past, will produce an enchanting mountaintop festival experience; along with a stellar cast of musical cohorts. I hope all of you have the serendipity to join me, in the revelry of another Panic induced All Good Festival

Furthur Tour - Phil Lesh - Bob Weir - Rocked Their Way Up East Coast

Back on the road and fully warmed up after a near two week long run of public rehearsals, Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, blew many minds with tight and highly energetic performances from Miami to New York City + this month. Furthur's arrangement consists of Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane and Joe Russo. Furthur has been accompanied by backup singers Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia Becker.

Furthur is now confirmed to perform at this summer's All Good Festival - July 8-11, 2010.  The small festival provides an intimate festival experience.  This year is set to be off-the-hook with such an amazing lineup that the festival is bound to sell out before early spring.

Furthur has also confirmed to perform on July 2 and July 3 in Maine at the Nateva Festival 22 years to the date that the Grateful Dead performed in Maine.  The shows back then were too much fun to describe and this year should be no different.  Furthur's announcement to perform on July Fourth Weekend in Maine seems to be a major contributing factor to Rothbury Festival postponing this summer's scheduled festival which was scheduled for July Fourth Weekend also.
