Umphrey's McGee played for another sold out crowd at the Taft Theater with Tauk (Brooklyn). Tauk played an incredible opening set on Friday night at the sold out venue. Umphrey's went on and dazzled the crowd with a great set that concluded with Oceans Billy featuring Nick Blasky on Bass. The second set had several guest stars including Mad Dog's Filthy Litte Secret Horns for Umphrey's encore of Peg (Steely Dan Cover), Dump City, Sledgehammer (Peter Gabriel Cover). Check Umphrey's on tour and be sure to see them at one of many festivals they are already confirmed for this summer, including their own Summer Camp.

Umphrey's McGee and The Werks Bring It to Fraze Pavilion

Umphrey's McGee and The Werks made a stop on their current tour at Fraze Pavilion. The weather was sunny which turned to rain by the beginning of the first set. By mid-set the sun was back out and everyone was ready to get down on this Saturday night. I got a chance to talk to a few band members before the show. They seemed a bit tired from the previous nights' fun at Electric Forest Festival. They still pulled off an amazing two sets of their brand of rock with the same intensity as usual! Umphrees finished off their second set with a Slayer cover into Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain." UM has hit most of the major festivals (Bonnaroo, Electric Forest) and are on the way to Red Rocks and back to the East/South for Gathering of the Vibes and other fests. Check them out at Umphrey's (dot) com and their new album, Similar Skin.

Umphrey's McGee Closes Out Four Nights At Brooklyn Bowl - By Bill Kelly

Umphrey's McGee at Brooklyn Bowl
Musicianship was on display in Williamsburg Friday night as Umphrey's McGee completed a sold out four night run.  Led by the dual guitar team of Brendan Baylis and Jake Cinninger, the band and crowd traded energy all night.  Like a louder, jazz inflected offspring of the Grateful Dead (Bob Weir joined that band during Tuesday night's second set) the band used songs as framework for improvisation, touching on classic jazz (Davis' "So What") and classic Rock, covering Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" and The Who.  The audience and band communicated regularly, moving in unison.  Rounded out by Ryan Stasik's booming base darting in between the two guitarist,  percussionist Kris Myers and Andy Farig and Joel Cummins' keyboard and synth, the band displayed a veteran jams band sense of exploration; pushing, leaving and returning to themes.  It was clear from the reaction of the crowd that that was exactly what they came for.

Christmas Jam, December 2010, Asheville, NC - (click on photos for large view)

The Christmas Jam in Asheville is a yearly event hosted by guitarist Warren Haynes.  All proceeds are donated to Habitat for Humanity.  The caliber of musicians, the beautiful Asheville charm, the official “Pre-Jam” and the shows before and after the official “Christmas Jam” turned out to be a 24-hour festival filled with southern jams, lots of guitars, and some very happy guests.

The Friday night “Pre-Jam” at The Orange Peel, the crowd was treated to the official Christmas Jam rehearsal, aproposly named “The Pre-Jam.”  The Orange Peel unveiled the annually made brew Christmas Jam White Ale, and the crowd enjoyed a preview of the headliners for the “Christmas Jam:” Dirty Dozen Brass Band, John Bell, JoJo Hermann, Todd Nance, Umphree’s McGee, Steve Miller, Warren Haynes, Gregg Allman, and Ivan Neville, among others.

Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center for an evening packed with rocking jams from Umphree’s McGee,  John Bell (Widespread Panic), Steve Miller singing with a harpist, the unveiling of The Warren Haynes Band with Ivan Neville, Ruthie Foster, and Ron Holloway.

Gregg Allman played and jammed with Haynes, Neville, Audley Freed, and Cody Dickinson.

John Bell came on to sing with Allman, and then New Orleans’ own The Dirty Dozen Brass Band came on to add horns into the mix and the jam kept sliding on and on late into the evening.

It was also snowing outside.  Inside that Civic Center, on the other hand, was hot,… sweaty hot.
