Gov't Mule and Dark Side of the Mule at Red Rocks 8-7-23

Michael Yanko

Rock Legends Photographers

Red Rocks was on my bucket list for many years. In early July I got an email from Gov't Mule stating that they were going to be playing there on 8-7-23 doing their Dark Side of the Mule performance. I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to cross this one off my list. After doing a little research I found out that not only was Jason Bonham opening the show with his Led Zeppeling Evening, Joe Bonamassa was playing there the night before. The decision was made, and 15 minutes later I had flights, car rental, and a hotel all booked. I was very excited to cross this one off my list and enjoy 2 nights of amazing music. I had seen Gov't Mule several times before, but I had heard that the DSOTM shows are spectacular. I was very excited for this 2 great days of music.

Unlike the previous rainy night the weather was perfect. Special guest Jason Bonham and his Led Zeppelin Evening opened the show with an amazing tribute to Zeppelin. This was the perfect band to preface the amazing performance we were all about to experience.

June 24, 2016
Nashville, TN

Warren Haynes brought the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration to Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The elegant hall more accustomed to Black Tie and Elegant evening wear was overwhelmed with tie dye and dreadlocks. Where the patrons usually sit politely the kids (of all ages) danced and spun the night away.

The 26th Annual Christmas Jam presented by Warren Haynes returned to the US Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina for what was unpredictably one of the most diverse events in the show’s long history.  The night was a mixed bag full of musical collaborations and musical styles.  2014’s event was chock full tributes.  The musicians paid homage to rock and roll legends throughout the night, especially Phish, The Beatles, and Neal Young.

The first set included Mule songs and the second set was all Neil Young. The band played for three and a half hours and played 37 songs. They played every classic Neil Young song including "Hey Hey My My, Down by the River, Southern Man, Ohio, Heart of Gold, Rockin in the Free World, " and many more. The encore of "Cortez the Killer" was a crowd and personal favorite. Check out the setlist at Mule Net.

Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon Theater

The Road Doesn’t Go On Forever....
Images and article by Bill Kelly

Bittersweet can best describe the feeling evoked by Friday night’s sold out show at the Beacon, the fifth of fourteen sold out evenings of the bands final Beacon run.  An almost unbroken run (let’s not get into the whole Dolan/Circus thing) since 1989, over 200 shows that have become as much a harbinger of spring in New York as March Madness and crocuses blooming in Central Park a few blocks east of the theater.

The 25th Annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam

Warren Haynes
Warren Haynes
The annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam returned to the US Cellular Center (formerly the Asheville Civic Center) in December for its 25th year.  The event has one again expanded to two nights plus the Pre-Jam on Thursday night at the Orange Peel.  The Christmas Jam has been one of the integral events in Asheville’s annual musical calendar since its much smaller debut in 1989.  Every year features sought-after bands and musicians of all types collaborating together to create a musical experience like no other.  Local hero and Gov’t Mule front man Warren Haynes has manufactured an event that not only gives people the best in musical talent, but also gives back to the community.  All proceeds from the event go to the Habitat for Humanity, which is a non-profit organization that aims to assist people with affordable housing.  The X-mas Jam has become so popular over the years that tickets are guaranteed to sell out weeks before the event.

The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration, Red Hat Amphitheater, Raleigh, NC 6/20/2013

By Joe Carney
An evening of Jerry’s music celebrated through a mixture of Warren Haynes magical guitar work and The North Carolina Symphony’s classical interpretation of some of America’s most Iconic music.  The evening started with a lovely pre equinox day of sunshine and cool breezes, the Red Hat Amphitheater filled steadily in anticipation of the evenings mysterious pairing, with a crowd that ran the gamut of Jerry Garcia followers, Warren Haynes fans and Symphony regulars, all mixed together in an evening gown, tie-dyed swirl of joy. Magic was in the air as the house music quieted down and led by Albert-George Schram, conductor for the North Carolina Symphony, the sounds of symphonic tunings poured into the excited crowd, paired with the all-star bands instrument adjustments.

I'll Have a Beach Breeze with My Gov't Mule

Warren Haynes with Gov't Mule
Saturday at the 2013 Hangout Festival was full of classic rock and roll on the main Hangout Stage.  On this beautiful afternoon on the beach, Gov’t Mule’s hard guitar licks took over from 3:30-4:45.  The southern rock band is led by possibly one of the hardest working men in show business, Warren Haynes on lead guitar and vocals.  He is also known for his time playing with The Allman Brothers and The Dead.  Gov’t Mule also features Matt Abts on drums, Danny Louis on keys and rhythm guitar, and Jorgen Carlsson on bass.  This Hangout performance really showcased Haynes’ daunting guitar skill with his consistent wailing guitar solos and effects.  These veterans play so well together as a band that it makes any rock and roll lover an instant fan.  One highlight of the show was the song “Soulshine,” originally done by Larry McCray.

Allman Brothers Band at The Beacon - 2013

Images and article by Bill Kelly
On Friday evening the Allman Brothers began a 11 night run at the Beacon Theater that has become an annual harbinger of Spring in the New York area.  Following last year’s residency, many in attendance felt that Gregg Allman’s tenure with the band was drawing to a close; he left the second to last night show late in the 2nd set because of pain from a bulging disc and could not appear at the last show at all, being replaced by Bruce Katz on organ with Warren Haynes picking up lead vocals.  On Friday night, in much better health, Allman sang strongly, in full voice as the entire Beacon joined him singing Midnight Rambler.

The Allman Brothers At The Beacon - Jukes Horns And Eric Krasno Help Celebrate 40th Anniversary Of Eat A Peach

Images and article by Bill Kelly

More than March madness, Spring training or early crocuses, to many New Yorkers the sure harbinger of spring is the Allman Brother’s multi-night run at the Beacon. Opening the show with a recording of  Bill Grahm’s introduction to the classic Filmore East concert of June 27th, 1971, the band covered songs both on the original record plus Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues and Whipping Post from the 2006 live bonus release from that historic show.   In between the opening Trouble No More and rousing Whipping Post encore, the Allmans were joined for several songs by the Jukes horns, who played with the band through amazing covers of The Band’s It Makes No Difference, and, according to Haynes, Bill Grahm’s favorite tune, Van Morrison’s Into The Mystic.  A mid show accoustic set included a rare rendering of Duane Allman’s Little Martha.

Christmas Jam, December 2010, Asheville, NC - (click on photos for large view)

The Christmas Jam in Asheville is a yearly event hosted by guitarist Warren Haynes.  All proceeds are donated to Habitat for Humanity.  The caliber of musicians, the beautiful Asheville charm, the official “Pre-Jam” and the shows before and after the official “Christmas Jam” turned out to be a 24-hour festival filled with southern jams, lots of guitars, and some very happy guests.

The Friday night “Pre-Jam” at The Orange Peel, the crowd was treated to the official Christmas Jam rehearsal, aproposly named “The Pre-Jam.”  The Orange Peel unveiled the annually made brew Christmas Jam White Ale, and the crowd enjoyed a preview of the headliners for the “Christmas Jam:” Dirty Dozen Brass Band, John Bell, JoJo Hermann, Todd Nance, Umphree’s McGee, Steve Miller, Warren Haynes, Gregg Allman, and Ivan Neville, among others.

Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center for an evening packed with rocking jams from Umphree’s McGee,  John Bell (Widespread Panic), Steve Miller singing with a harpist, the unveiling of The Warren Haynes Band with Ivan Neville, Ruthie Foster, and Ron Holloway.

Gregg Allman played and jammed with Haynes, Neville, Audley Freed, and Cody Dickinson.

John Bell came on to sing with Allman, and then New Orleans’ own The Dirty Dozen Brass Band came on to add horns into the mix and the jam kept sliding on and on late into the evening.

It was also snowing outside.  Inside that Civic Center, on the other hand, was hot,… sweaty hot.
