Dead & Company Playin' In The Sand Feb 15 - 18 2018 in Riviera Maya, Mexico - photos and review

Playing in the Sand 2018 featuring three Dead and Company shows was the trip of a lifetime for Deadheads all over the world; a destination event in the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The nightly concerts took place on February 15th, 17th and 18th at the Barceló Maya Beach resort, on the Caribbean Sea where the band played and the crowd danced in the white sands and turquoise waters.  A bonus concert on Friday February 16th included the serene and lively Michael Franti who danced through the crowd singing, hugging and talking with fans.

Thankful the Music never stopped...Dead and Co.

It's Thanksgiving Day and I am Grateful. It's been 20 years since Jerry died and yet I just saw and photographed a band that had me dancing like I was still a 16 year old kid at the old Filmore. While the Grateful Dead as we knew ceased to exist that sad day in August, 1995, the remaining members have kept the music alive for us. Furthur, The Dead, The Other Ones, Ratdog, Phil and friends, The Rythem Devils, Billy and the Kids, The Mickey Hart Band, and now Dead and Co.

Drum Lovers Unite for Mickey Hart

Mickey Hart
Mickey Hart
Returning to Asheville, North Carolina’s famous musical venue and social club, The Orange Peel, was one of the founding percussionists of the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart.  The heavy rhythm and percussion oriented Mickey Hart Band came through in a rolling thunder, playing to a packed out club with Deadheads from all over and of all ages.  The current lineup for the Mickey Hart Band is Mickey on percussion, Crystal Monee Hall on vocals, Joe Bagale on guitar and keys, Reed Mathis on bass guitar, Gawain Matthews on guitar, Sikiru Adepolu on the talking drum and other percussion, Greg Schutte on Drums and Jonah Sharp on keys.  Mickey Hart has spent much of his life studying music from all over the world, and it shows in his versatile range of skills in different types off percussion including djembes of all sizes, cowbells, and digital drum machines.

The Mickey Hart Band

Mickey Hart with the Mickey Hart Band

The final installment of Grateful Dead music over the course the weekend at All Good Music
Festival and Campout 2012 was The Mickey Hart Band on Sunday afternoon. Mickey, one of the
drummers from the Grateful Dead, led a terrific show backed by Dave Schools from Widespread Panic on bass, Gawain Mathews on lead guitar, Joe Bagal on lead vocals and keyboard, Sikiru Adepoju on talking drum and djembe, Crystal Monee Hall on background vocals, and Ian Herman on drums. Of
course, Mickey was going full-throttle playing a myriad of percussion instruments including cowbells,
djembes, and even a digital drum pad.

The Dead - Phil Lesh & Bob Weir at Rothbury Festival July 4, 2009
The Dead, after a rockin spring tour in 2009 took the summer off except for one performance at the 2009 Rothbury Festival.  Hailed as the only summer performance of The Dead in 2009, Rothbury was no let down.  The Dead played on July 4, a date known for awesome Grateful Dead performances, which only added to the excitement.

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir are now headling Furthur tour.  Furthur just completed a long run in Mill Valley, CA where the band opened up their practice sessions to a lucky few who were able to scoop up the $25 tickets before they near immediately sold out.  To prevent scalping, the band only allowed one ticket to be purchased per credit card.  Tickets were not transferrable and had to be picked up at the event.  This seems like it'd be too much to do for a large performance at a big venue but I think it was an effective manuver.
