It was a beautiful Southern California weekend as the weather was perfect for an all outdoor festival. It was the 2^nd annual KAABOO and my second time in attendance for this three-day event. There were definitely more options this year than last as KAABOO advertised itself as a high end all sensory experience including good food and spirits, spa like indulgences, music, comedy and art. Tortuga Music Festival took place on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. the weekend of April 12-13, 2014. An awesome event with great concerts, a great atmosphere, and beautiful weather. It did unfortunately rain a little on Sunday. However that did not deter the music and the fans from having a great time. After a little rain in the morning and early afternoon the weather again turned beautiful and everyone was happy.

All Good Music Festival and Campout 2013 returns to Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio July 28-22 for another four days of love, harmony, and musicianship. This year’s festival follows in the tradition of honoring the Grateful Dead culture with the foremost headliner being Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. The rest of the lineup contains lots for anyone to enjoy no matter what kind of music they are into. Notable performances will include Pretty Lights, Primus, and Dark Star Orchestra. Bluegrass fans will take delight in seeing Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys, and The Infamous Stringdusters.

I'll Have a Beach Breeze with My Gov't Mule

Saturday at the 2013 Hangout Festival was full of classic rock and roll on the main Hangout Stage.  On this beautiful afternoon on the beach, Gov’t Mule’s hard guitar licks took over from 3:30-4:45.  The southern rock band is led by possibly one of the hardest working men in show business, Warren Haynes on lead guitar and vocals.  He is also known for his time playing with The Allman Brothers and The Dead.  Gov’t Mule also features Matt Abts on drums, Danny Louis on keys and rhythm guitar, and Jorgen Carlsson on bass.  This Hangout performance really showcased Haynes’ daunting guitar skill with his consistent wailing guitar solos and effects.  These veterans play so well together as a band that it makes any rock and roll lover an instant fan.  One highlight of the show was the song “Soulshine,” originally done by Larry McCray.

Playing to a moderately packed Boom Boom Tent at the Thursday Night Pre-Party on Thursday, May 16^th was up and coming DJ Dillon Francis.  He played a steady mix of house music, dubstep, and reggaeton dance hall style electronica that kept the crowd moving the whole time.  His hour long set was a good interlude to the headlining acts for the night which included Umphrey’s McGee and Benny Benassi.  Dillon Francis, at only 25 years old, is rising to the top of the dance music scene.  He is a master of remixing other artists tracks and he produces his own music with a unique blend of high-energy styles.

Gracing the main stage at Hangout festival 2013 on Sunday, May 13 was British sensation Ellie Goulding.  Despite winning numerous awards and having a number 1 album in her home country of the United Kingdom, her fame in the United States is just starting to blossom.  She played to a jam-packed beach and said on stage how wonderful it was since she had been getting used to playing in front of crowds of 20 people at her other US shows.   Ellie’s soprano voice can only be described as angelic.  Her melodies rang throughout the ears of the audience with a resonating splendor.

Headlining the night of Saturday, May 18th at The Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama were the legends of All-American classic rock-n-roll, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers playing to a jam-packed crowd on the beach. This show contained the majority of Petty’s major hits from the past thirty or so years, so everyone was singing right along as the show went on. The crowd heard “Last Dance With Mary Jane,” “I won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” and “American Girl,” amongst many more. Other highlights were covers such as Muddy Waters’ “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and The Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil.” The Heartbreakers consist of lead guitarist Mike Campbell, Benmont Trench on keys, bassist Ron Blair, drummer Steve Ferrone, Scott Thurston on rhythm guitar, and of course Petty on rhythm guitar, vocals, and harmonica. Being the Saturday night headliner of a major music festival puts a lot of pressure on the band to perform a top-notch show, but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers came through with a stellar performance without even flinching.

The Flaming Lips Magic at All Good Festival

The Flaming Lips are known for their delightful on-stage theatrics and crowd engagement.  This was especially the case when they performed for a jam packed audience at the 2012 All Good Music Festival and Campout in Thornville, Ohio.  The Lips started out the show by playing arguably one of their best songs, “Race for the Prize.”  The next two hours would hold numerous other philosophical yet entertaining songs including a cover of Pink Floyd’s “On the Run”.  

SOJA Stirs Up All Good Festival

Nothing beats a little reggae on a Friday afternoon at All Good Music Festival and Campout.
That’s why it was so pleasing to see SOJA (Soldiers of Jah Army) bring a little poppy roots fusion to the main stage. This high-energy Washington D.C. based band really got the crowd pumped in the warm Ohio sun. The octet knew exactly how to utilize its percussion and horns sections in a way that can get anyone to dance whether they knew the band or not. Topped off by Jacob Hemphill’s lyrics that SOJA’s fans were belting out as he sang, they created the perfect light-hearted medley of ear-pleasing melodies. It seemed as if everyone was in a good mood as the band played their song “Strength to Survive,” which is the title track from their new 2012 album. One of the best things about All Good is their rotating performances on two adjacent main stages, so all sorts of people were able to catch this rockin’ set as they soak up the good vibes from the beautiful festival environment.

Headlining this past year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was the jamband of all jambands, Phish, who gave it their all for two full sets of music on the infamous “What Stage.” This band has quite the reputation for putting on an epic live show, and Bonnaroo was no exception. As usual for the Sunday night headliner, there was no other music on any of the other stages. Needless to say it seemed pretty apparent that they had the biggest crowd of the weekend. There were people as far as the eye could see for this truly remarkable feat of light and sound.

 Bringing the funk back to Bonnaroo Music Festival, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk tore up the stage at the ‘Other Tent’ late night on Friday, June 9th 2012. The New Orleans funk quintet did not disappoint their fans one bit as they lived up to their high energy performance expectation. One of the highlights of the set was a funktastic rendition of David Bowie’s “Fame” that really had the crowd getting down and dirty in the warm Manchester, Tennessee night.

Art vs. Science is an three piece techno-pop band from Australia that gave a lively performance at

the 2012 Bonnaroo Music Festival. Their short afternoon set at the Sonic Stage on Saturday, June

9th was a very unique sounding medley of house beats, rock & roll, and synthed out keyboards. This

distinguishing blend of musical styles and influences gives them a style that they can call their own.

For being a newer band they definitely had a hugely confident stage presence, being dressed in silver

space suits and knowing exactly how to get the crowd hyped.

On Saturday June 9th, 2012 in “That Tent” at Bonnaroo Music Festival saw a performance by none other than 70’s and 80’s metal icon Alice Cooper. This show was yet another contribution to Bonnaroo’s recent theme of hosting nostalgic rock performances from the past thirty years. The crowd was a testament to this, consisting mostly of the older portion of the Bonnaroo attendees. Despite this being his sixth decade being a musical performer, Cooper and his band gave a high energy performance that was surprisingly entertaining. The foggy backdrop on the stage matched the costumes that Cooper and his cronies were wearing; they looked as if they came straight out of an 80’s hair-band music video from a cheesy horror movie.

GZA & Wu-Tang Clan at Bonnaroo

To close out “This Tent” on Saturday, June 9^th at the Bonnaroo Music Festival was an iconic performance from none other than GZA (Gary Grice) performing the album Liquid Swords with Groupo Fantasma playing his background beats live. GZA, who gained notoriety as a founding member the legendary Staten Island based hip hop ensemble Wu-Tang Clan, brought back the hype that has been surrounding the LP since its release in 1995.

Colin Hay, the front man from the Australian 1980’s super-group, Men at Work, made a
performance at the 2012 Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. He played three shows
during this monster of a festival, hosting upwards of 80,000 festival goers over the course of four days.
His short 30 minute set on the Solar Stage on Friday, June 8th is seen below in the photos. It captured a
smaller crowd for those willing to brave the mid-afternoon sun. Everyone who thought they would get
their retro music fix from a full blown energetic Men at Work concert was dead wrong.

Concert Photos Magazine and Performance Impressions concert photography archives are bringing you photos from 12 Furthur shows on the first 12 days of 2012!  Here is day 3 - Furthur at Gathering of the Vibes - GOTV 2011!

On July 22, 2011, being seaside at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut provided little relief from the bombarding heat even though the site for Gathering of the Vibes is on the coast of Long Island Sound.   The second day of the festival tied the record high temperature for Bridgeport of 103° set in 1957.

The New Mastersounds Winter Shows & Photos

The New Mastersounds with Eddie Roberts, Simon Allen, Pete Shand and Joe Tatton performed a high energy, sweat-dripping late night set at Gathering of the Vibes this summer (photos below).  The New Mastersounds are playing at The Warfield in San Francisco with the Tedeschi Trucks Band on New Year's Eve.  There are still tickets available for the NYE show.  The New Mastersounds will be at the Bond-Fire Art & Music Festival in Deland, Florida on New Year's Day.  The band, after a week of sun will be at Revolution Live in Ft. Lauderdale on January 8 before setting sail on Jam Cruise.
