More than March madness, Spring training or early crocuses, to many New Yorkers the sure harbinger of spring is the Allman Brother’s multi-night run at the Beacon. Opening the show with a recording of  Bill Grahm’s introduction to the classic Filmore East concert of June 27th, 1971, the band covered songs both on the original record plus Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues and Whipping Post from the 2006 live bonus release from that historic show.   In between the opening Trouble No More and rousing Whipping Post encore, the Allmans were joined for several songs by the Jukes horns, who played with the band through amazing covers of The Band’s It Makes No Difference, and, according to Haynes, Bill Grahm’s favorite tune, Van Morrison’s Into The Mystic.  A mid show accoustic set included a rare rendering of Duane Allman’s Little Martha. 

The Dunwells - Mercury Lounge NYC

Hailing from Leeds, England, composed of two brother, two cousins and a close friend, The Dunwells played a crisp set at New York’s Mercury Lounge on their way to being properly discovered by American audiences at the upcoming South By Southwest festival.  Sounding new but firmly rooted in the harmonized traditions of CSN and Mumford and Sons, the Dunwells demonstrated strong roots in the British-American folk rock, blues traditions that have pinged back and forth between the continents since the early days of the British invasion.  Featuring tracks from their premier album Blind Sighted Faith, the young band showcased soaring, five part harmonies and musicianship that would be envied by many more travelled bands.

Body surfing, scantily clad woman, surging crowd with fists pumping, ahhh for the 90’s....But this was a Sunday night in the sleepy North Shore town of Huntington, a town better known for date-night restaurants and local pubs rather than the center of alt-Rock frenzy.  But, Jane’s Addiction, bringing their eclectic Theater Of The Escapist tour to the Paramount, drove the crowd into a fist pumping ecstasy from the first note.

Early in their first set,  Dave Nelson explained that the current line up of the band, which includes original pedal steel (post Garcia) player Buddy Cage, guitarist Mike Falzarano, bassist Ronnie Penque and Johnny Markowski on drums, is the longest tenured in their 40 plus year history.  Even more remarkable, the band is touring behind its new release 17 Pine Avenue, following 2009’s Where I Come From.

Nashville Cats still prowling

Tucked away in a sleepy backwater of Nashville where you can still hear roosters crow I visited a recording studio where an old friend, Lorrie Bennett (Anita Carter’s daughter) is cutting an album. Cinderella Sound, owned and operated by Wayne Moss, has seen many greats in it’s time. Artists that have recorded there include Steve Miller, Linda Ronstadt, Ricky Scaggs, Charlie Daniels, and many more.

Dr. Dog Album Release at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, California

Dr. Dog played for a sold out crowd in Solana Beach on 2/7/2012 for the release of their new album, Be The Void. The band played several songs off their new release including the opener, "That Old Black Hole, " which they would go on to play the following night on Conan O'brien. The band's seventh album has been a hit with the critics and fans alike as they went to their own studio with Anti- Records to create a primitive style recording that showcases their raw style as a band. Dr. Dog is currently on tour in the United States and selling out shows everywhere. 

Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes - Keep on Moving - Paramount Theater, Huntington NY

Still rolling along close to 40 years after emerging from the Jersey Shore, Southside Johnny (nee Lyon) brought his Stax driven bar band sound to the newly renovated Paramount Theater in Huntington New York.  The band played a mixed set comprised of several tunes from the 2010 release Pills And Ammo along with old favorites like Fever and I Don’t Want To Go Home.  Decades on the road have not weakened Johnny’s voice, but rather added a full, throaty roar that would be envied by musicians half his age.
