Paul Simon Plays Jazz at Lincoln Center

Me and Julio, and Wynton and Aaron

Images and article by Bill Kelly
Never known for resting on laurels or a familiar musical path, Paul Simon brought a unique new perspective to his songbook, playing with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for three sold out shows.  Exploring a wide range of musical genres since leaving Simon and Garfunkel, this was the first time Simon lent his music to jazz interpretation.  Never straying far from original arrangements, the songs were gently tweaked by Marsalis and the Orchestra; the underlying Afro-Caribbean sound and tempos remained, augmented by the horn section and Simon’s band.

Levon Helm will Ramble forever

by Butch Worrell
Nashville, TN

In memoriam for Levon Helm, I have re posted my original photo gallery from the April 21, 2010 Ryman Auditorium Ramble. I'm sure the Ramble in heaven is in full swing now, the angels are dancing and spinning away while Levon sings and runs the show.

Joan Osborne at City Winery

Images and article by Bill Kelly

Joan Osborne kicked off her Bring It On Home tour with a two night set at New York’s City Winery.  Featuring hand picked vintage blues and soul standards, Osborne has said the she would make this album when she knew “...the time was right and my voice was ready”.  Judging from the Wednesday night show, Osborne’s voice was more than ready; she not only sang classic tunes like Ray Charles’ “I Don’t Need No Doctorand the Slim Harpo’s “Shake Your Hips”,  she owned them, bringing her throaty sensuality to places where the boys could never go.
Backed up by her recording/travelling band featuring Aaron Comess on drums, bassist Richard Harris, Keith Cotton on keys, Andrew Carillo and long-time muscial director Jack Peturzzelli on guitar, Osborne led the band through a set of songs from the new recording, early repertoire hits like St Theresa and a moving cover of Van Morrison’s “Tupulo Honey”.

Franklin Theatre, the heart of town still beats out loud!

By Butch Worrell

Franklin, TN’s downtown is arguably the best preserved and coolest of the old town squares in Tennessee. And when the old Franklin Theatre built in 1937 and described as the “Heart” of Main Street faced possible demolition, the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County stepped in and spent Millions not just to save it but to make it a first class venue.
